Santorini belongs to Cyclades, a group of islands that lie on the Aegean Sea, among other clusters of islands scattered all around, each one with its own unique natural beauty. Nevertheless, only a few destinations are feasible for a day trip starting from Santorini due to the fact that most of the nearby islands don’t own an airport and the ferry routes are insufficient and not regular.

Visiting islands like Naxos and Paros is an almost impractical idea since it means you will only have a few hours to spend there, and therefore you won’t be given the opportunity to explore these islands and enjoy your trip. It is probably not worth it but it is still an option, if the ferry schedule allows it, for those who want to get a glimpse of these popular, adorable islands.

A better idea is to visit more easily accessible islands, such as Folegandros, Sikinos or Anafi, but again you should be very careful with ferry routes in order to be sure if you can have plenty hours ahead of you, enough to relish these places and go sightseeing or enjoy a relaxing day by the beach.

The best choice for a day away is certainly the island of Ios. It takes less than an hour to get there and you’ll have many hours to get to know the island and treasure new experiences, which make it the most doable trip. Another reason to choose Ios is that it is a very beautiful island with an intense nightlife, making it a particularly popular place for young people. It has got amazing beaches with crystal-clear waters and its capital is an adorable, picturesque settlement that offers amazing views to the sea.

Of course the number one suggestion is the neighboring island of Therasia; the quickest, easiest and most inexpensive day trip as it lies just opposite of Santorini. There are several daily tours that depart from the port of Ammoudi and it only takes about 20 minutes to get there. Therasia is a small, volcanic island lost in time. The sense of serenity is evident in every corner of this traditional island and it is ideal for relaxing moments in the peaceful settlements or, better, in its unspoiled beaches. You will also have the chance to admire the volcano and the breathtaking caldera of Santorini from a different, interesting angle.
