This significant mansion is one of the most prominent cultural centers on the island, dedicated to the spiritual development and cultural improvement of its residents.

Megaro Gyzi is located in the capital of Santorini, Fira, and has an important history, dating back to the 17th century. In fact, it is one of the few still existing mansions, since it partially managed to survive the severe earthquake of 1956. The Megaro belonged to the Gyzi family, whose coat of arms decorates the entrance of the mansion, and stands out as a brilliant example of the exceptional architecture of that era. With the support of the Catholic Diocese of Santorini, it was beautifully restored to its former glory in 1980, and functions as a minimal cultural center with various facilities, which maintains its originality and distinct characteristics.

Megaro Gyzi Museum 2

The Megaro Gyzi Museum is situated inside the mansion and hosts five permanent collections, available for public viewing from May to October. There, visitors can admire original engravings that depict maps, landscapes, and traditional Cycladic costumes from the 15th to the 19th century. Additionally, the museum houses old public and private manuscripts of the Catholic Diocese of Santorini that provide an insight into the culture and lifestyle of Santorini from the 16th to the 19th century, as well as a collection of tools, artifacts, and utensils of everyday life in Greece. Furthermore, there is a collection of old photographs that present a bygone era of Santorini and an admirable collection of its volcanic rocks.

Besides the museum, the cultural center organizes several cultural events annually, especially during summer. These events include theatrical performances, music recitals, concerts, painting and photographic exhibitions, lectures, and book presentations, that offer an alternative way of entertainment to locals and tourists. Thus, it surely contributes to the cultural life of the island and safeguards its cultural heritage at the same time. Plus, it gives new local artists the opportunity to present their work!

Starting from 2007, the Megaron Gyzi Festival has taken place on its premises every August. This is an event that includes art exhibitions, theatrical performances, concerts, and many other free shows, designed for both adults and children, offering people the opportunity to watch renowned Greek and foreign artists and broaden their horizons. This distinguished festival has also received the EFFE Label for 2015-2016 and 2017-2018, which serves as Europe's prestigious recognition for exceptional arts festivals. What is more, Santorini joined the network of the European Festival of Music in 2008 through its association with Megaro Gyzi.

The Gyzi Megaron Cultural Center also features a shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs like mugs, bowls, buttons, notepads, bookmarks and fans with interesting sketches. However, the shop's highlight is the many publications, books and photographic albums concerning Santorini and the rest Cycladic islands. Additionally, it offers authentic lithographs by famous Greek artists, replicas of the original engravings that are exhibited at the museum, and colored signed serigraphs of various artists.

Touring the Megaro Gyzi Museum establishes a connection for all visitors with the distant past, providing fascinating insights into the history of Santorini Island!
